Fabulous Females - Illinois Youth Center, Warrenville
Fabulous Females serves young women incarcerated at Illinois Youth Center (IYC-W) at Warrenville. The year-round program provides an outlet for the young women to experience the success of personal development through the writing and performance of songs, poems, stories and scenes inspired by their personal experiences.
Fabulous Females participants meet twice a week to share and discuss their writing by looking for common themes and life challenges. Storycatchers teaching artists, volunteers, and members of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra form collaborative groups with the girls. This supportive structure ensures meaningful, one-on-one interactions with positive adult role models. Based on this group experience, writers create composite characters, outline and create a musical play.
Throughout the sessions, participants will set expectations and goals for themselves that help to reinforce the need for positive interactions with peers, staff and families. Members of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra Chorus help the girls develop their singing and performance skills and perform alongside them in showcases.
